Monash City Council has set up its tree removal regulations and related approvals for tree work on the basis of ‘Vegetation Protection Overlay’ (VPO) zones. In a nutshell, if your tree lies within an identified ‘VPO’, then there are a range of approvals that are required for any work to be undertaken, but if your tree does not fall within a stated ‘VPO’, the requirements are much less stringent. Check out Monash City Council Vegetation Protection Overlay for further information on Monash City Council ‘Vegetation Protection Overlay’ (VPO) zones. Refer to the Monash City Council Vegetation Protection Overlay Map for a visual representation of Monash City Council VPO zones.
If your tree lies within a VPO zone, and the trunk has a circumference greater than 500mm (160mm diameter) at 1200mm above ground level, or if the tree is higher than 10 metres, a planning permit is required. Details relating to a Monash City Council tree removal permit can be found at Monash City Council Tree Removal Permit Requirements.
Typically, if your tree falls outside a VPO zone or is smaller than the sizes specified above, there are few restrictions on tree removal or tree pruning within Monash City Council – however it pays to exercise caution.
Normally speaking, there is no restriction within Monash City Council for the removal of:
- Dead trees
- Willow Trees
- Radiata or Monterey Pines
- Evergreen Alders
- Sweet Pittosporums
- Desert Ashes
- Trees (or vegetation) that present an immediate risk of personal injury or damage to property. Only the part that presents the immediate risk may be removed.
