About Maroondah Council Tree Removal Regulations

Private trees within Maroondah City Council are subject to a variety of restrictions and requirements that are part of the Maroondah Planning Scheme, which can be accessed at the Maroondah City Council Planning Scheme. Within this scheme, numerous ‘overlays’ exist, which place specific restrictions on what may be done in particular situations or locations, without obtaining a permit.

It is important to understand that multiple ‘overlays’ may exist in a specific situation, and this resulting complexity makes it highly advisable to contact the council before commencing any work. Explore the Maroondah City Council Tree Removal Permit Process for further details on the tree removal permit process for Maroondah City Council.

Planning Permits Required in Maroondah City Council

The Maroondah Planning Scheme requires a permit when significant work is required on the trees within the following ‘overlays’– subject to some exemptions, which are summarised below:

  • trees within the Significant Landscape Overlay (SLO)
  • trees in the Heritage Overlay (HO)
  • trees in the Neighbourhood Character Overlay (NCO)
  • any native vegetation in a Vegetation Protection Overlay (VPO)
  • any native vegetation from a property greater than 4000m2

Planning Permit Exemptions

Permits are generally not required in the SLO or VPO when:

  • you are adhering to a notice to clear fire hazards that specifically mention the tree(s) or related vegetation
  • clearance of electricity lines is needed (pruning only the minimum to keep the line clear)
  • the objective is regeneration or ornamental shaping (SLO)

However, it is advisable to check with council to ensure you are acting within the regulations.

Obtaining A Tree Removal Permit

To undertake work on trees that are protected under the Maroondah City Council Planning Scheme and its various overlays, you must apply for a permit (Maroondah City Council Tree Removal Permit Application), along with providing the application fee and any extra information, including the Certificate of Title and scaled site plans as necessary.

The cost of application fees for removing and or pruning trees can vary based on the overlay. Maroondah City Council Tree Removal Permit Fees helps highlight the fee structure. Specific restrictions or requirements that apply your property can be accessed via the online mapping tool, or by visiting or calling the Maroondah City Council Service Centre.
